Lessons While Abroad: part 1

The universe rewards expansion.

Sunset at Exuma Point, Bahamas

During the whole month of February, my partner and I traveled. I have travel before but never like this or for this duration. I was met with my first taste of culture shock. Leaving from the American Midwest, where the sun is blanketed by the clouds, we headed south in search of adventure. After our short burst of time travel, including plane and ferry, we arrived at our first destination, the tropical oasis known as the Bahamas.

THE UNIVERSE REWARDS EXPANSION

On the day one, I was met with my first teaching. Filled with joy of my new surroundings, I felt called to take a morning walk down to the beach to meet a new friend, The ocean. I had never touched the ocean before this trip, I have only seen it. My mind could not help but wonder towards negative thoughts of what’s under the surface or (since I’m not the strongest swimmer) the occasional “what if you drown?” thought came up. I started of with baby steps (literally) into the ocean. I felt the power of the tide at my legs. My feet sunk into the soft white sand as the waves drew back. Under the clear blue sky, I stared across the horizon admiring the several keys off in the distance. A sensational symphony from mother nature surrounded me, birds perched in a nearby tree sang soprano, the rhythmic churning of the waves provided a calming melody and the warm embrace from the sunshine above. All of my senses held one message, return to mother nature. I took an affirming deep breathe and stepped further into the ocean until the waves came up to my mid section. The water was fairly calm that day as the tide had not yet come in. I turned around to face the shore and slowly lifted my legs and rose my chest until I was being held by the water. I was extremely surprised at how buoyant I was (nothing at all like the lakes, where I am from) ,simply floating there . This further affirmed the message my senses shared earlier, at that moment I recognized how mother nature was embracing me just as much (maybe even more) as I was embracing her. Trusting her with my well being and as any loving mother would, she held me with great care.

This being my first encounter touching the ocean truly holds near and dear to my heart. The universe rewarded me with expansion during that moment of exploration. Imagine if I would have never taken the time to be present with my senses. Imagine if I choose to let fear take the wheel and I put on a life jacket during that encounter. Instead I choose to hold space for my emotions and eased into the experience. I took a risk. The universe heard me and rewarded me with such a tender experience.

I love this teaching. Applying that same formula moving forward. I have learned when faced with uncertainty, it’s best to be present with yourself. Allow those negative thoughts and feelings to drift past like clouds, observe them but don’t absorb them. Trust in your abilities as you have already gotten this far. Believe in yourself that you can achieve your goal. Soften and let the universe support you on your journey.
